Round Table Discussion

English as Medium of Instruction;

Towards Producing Globally Marketable Graduates in Meeting the Demands of 4IR

The round table discussion will be dealing with the issues of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in different countries, specifically in Japan, Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia. It will highlight on the challenges faced in the implementation of EMI and the steps taken by the different countries involved to overcome the challenges. Apart from that, the discussion will center upon how EMI play a role in producing globally marketable graduates. This is seen as timely, especially as higher learning institutions all over the world are gearing towards meeting the challenges and demands of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

Dr Sarah Catherine Boye

Sarah Boye is a lecturer of English and communication at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam, in Brunei, S.E. Asia. She has worked in language teacher education and TEFL and TESOL at universities in Brunei and Germany. Originally from Sheffield, in England, she obtained her M.A. (hons) in English and Sociology from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. She completed a Post-graduate Certificate of Education in English in 2004 and moved to Munich in Germany to work as an English lecturer. She completed her PhD in intercultural language education at the LMU University of Munich in 2015. Her research interests include intercultural language learning and English as a medium of instruction (EMI) in higher education. Her recent publications include the chapter “Language Awareness and the Acquisition of Intercultural Communicative Competence” with Michael Byram in the Routledge Handbook of Language Awareness.

Distinguished Professor Kensaku Yoshida 

Director, Center for Language Education and Research, Sophia University, Japan

Professor Kensaku Yoshida was born in Kyoto, Japan, in 1948 and educated at Sophia University (Japan) and the University of Michigan (USA). He is currently a Distinguished Professor at Sophia University and is the Director for Sophia University Center for Language Education and Research. Professor Yoshida is the former Dean of Sophia University Faculty of Foreign Studies and the former Director of Sophia Linguistics Institute for International Communication. He has participated as plenary and invited speaker at various international conferences such as Asia TEFL, English Teachers’ Organization-Republic of China, Georgetown Roundtable on Languages and Linguistics, JACET, JALT, KAFLE, KOTESOL and Monterey Institute of International Studies—Language Policy: Lessons from Global Models, TESOL. Apart from that, in International and Domestic Organizations, he is also the

former Trustee of The International Research Foundation for English Language Education (TIRF), a former member of Asia TEFL Executive Committee, a Member of the Developing Committee of TEAP (The Test of English for Academic Purposes), a Member of the Developing Committee of the National Airline Pilots’ English Proficiency Test and the President of J-Shine.

 

Professor Kensaku Yoshida has also served in Government related committees. Among which, he is  the Chair of Planning Committee to Implement 4 Skills Tests (National Center for University Entrance Examinations), a member of Steering Committee of Trustees (National Center for University Entrance Examinations), a member of Liaison Committee to Promote 4 Skills Tests and Credentials for Admission and Selection Purposes (Ministry of Education, Sports, Culture and Science-MEXT)), the former Chair of Committee of Specialists on Revision of English Education (MEXT), the former Chair of Committee to Discuss Ways to Improve the Foreign Language Ability of the Japanese (MEXT), a member of the Foreign Language Sub-committee of the Central Education Committee (MEXT), the former Chair of Strategic Committee to Discuss English Language Education (Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education), President of the Airline Pilots’ English Proficiency Assessment Committee (Ministry of Land and Transportation) He is also the Recipient of the Transportation Culture Award (Ministry of Land and Transportation) and the Recipient of the Best of JALT Award.

Associate Professor                  Dr. Ahmad Mazli Bin Muhammad

Associate Professor Dr. Ahmad Mazli Bin Muhammad is the current Dean at Akademi Pengajian Bahasa, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). He obtained his Masters in Curriculum and Teaching at Michigan State University and his Ph.D in Assessment and Evaluation at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He has been with UiTM for 30 years. His vast experience includes teaching and learning, curriculum design, delivery and assessment.

His current interest includes curriculum evaluation as well as alignment of outcomes to assessments. He has given talks and provided consultancy especially in aligning outcomes to assessments. His involvement in the technical committee of the iCGPA initiative has helped UiTM in fine tuning of academic curriculum at the university.

Dr. Ahmad Mazli is also involved in research projects and innovation initiatives. Currently, he is engaged in planning, policy and decision making for various initiatives at the faculty to uphold and upgrade the performance for six academic programmes (diploma, degree and post-graduate) and modern language courses.

Dr Airil Haimi Mohd Adnan

Airil Haimi Mohd Adnan, PhD MAEd MEd MA BSc BEd MRI(GB), is a 42-year-old Senior Lecturer and Head of Academic Centre at the Academy of Language Studies, UiTM Perak Branch. Externally appointed both as Honorary Visiting Scholar and Adjunct Research Fellow to Majlis Amanah Rakyat Malaysia (MARA) and Cosmopoint Colleges Malaysia, he is currently in the ASEAN-level Industry 4.0 policymaking group on Education, Training and The Future of Work. He has lived and worked for 8 years in England, and another 4 years in New Zealand. Whilst in New Zealand, he was the Adviser for Languages and Learning Technologies at the University of Auckland. Describing himself as a ‘multidisciplinary social scientist’, he has consulted many organisations in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei, appeared 200+ times on television and radio, and written 650+ newspaper and magazine articles, together with 40+ journal papers and 7 academic books.
